As an undocumented immigrant residing in California, you may have access to certain public assistance programs, though eligibility varies based on age, income, and household composition. Here’s an overview of the services currently available:
⸻
🏥 Medi-Cal (California’s Medicaid Program)
Current Access (as of June 2025):
• Full-Scope Medi-Cal: Since January 1, 2024, California has expanded full-scope Medi-Cal to include all income-eligible adults aged 26–49, regardless of immigration status. This coverage includes doctor visits, prescriptions, mental health services, dental and vision care, and more.
• Emergency and Pregnancy-Related Services: All undocumented individuals, regardless of age, remain eligible for limited-scope Medi-Cal, which covers emergency medical services and pregnancy-related care.
Proposed Changes:
Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed budgetary changes that, if approved, would:
• Freeze new Medi-Cal enrollments for undocumented adults aged 19 and older starting January 1, 2026.
• Introduce a $100 monthly premium for existing undocumented adult enrollees.
These proposals are subject to legislative approval and have not yet been enacted.
⸻
🛒 CalFresh (California’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)
Eligibility:
• Undocumented individuals are generally not eligible for CalFresh benefits.
• However, if you have U.S. citizen or eligible immigrant children or household members, you can apply for CalFresh benefits on their behalf. Your immigration status will not be considered in their eligibility determination.
Upcoming Changes:
• Effective October 1, 2025, California’s Food Assistance Program (CFAP) will expand to include individuals aged 55 and older, regardless of immigration status. Applications for this expansion will be accepted starting September 1, 2025.

📍 Local Assistance in Los Angeles County
If you’re located in Los Angeles County, additional resources may be available:
• Community Clinics: Many community health centers offer services on a sliding fee scale based on income, regardless of immigration status.
• Food Banks: Local food banks and pantries provide food assistance without requiring proof of citizenship or immigration status.
• Legal Aid Organizations: Nonprofit organizations can offer guidance on available services and assist with applications.
It’s advisable to contact local community organizations or the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services for more information on available resources.

⚠️ Important Considerations
• Public Charge Rule: Using Medi-Cal (except for long-term care in institutions) or CalFresh benefits for eligible family members does not count against you in public charge determinations for immigration purposes.
• Confidentiality: State and local agencies are prohibited from sharing your personal information with federal immigration authorities for immigration enforcement purposes
it’s almost amazing how people run from me how people turn from me and on me a few people have seen me for a little bit like on here some of you specifically Mark he gave me money couple times others of you too. I don’t want money but like I have the best nonprofit that I need help with and it’s a pretty great investment I think.
I’m posting this for my dad. For a while this place felt like a safe haven for him, but his brain injury also made it overwhelming. He’s always worn shirts – MAGA, “I Support Elon,” “I Identify as Vaccinated” – anything just to start conversations. That’s really what he wants, to talk to people and feel like he can help.
He feels the pain of people like him: brain injury survivors, disabled, homeless, mentally ill, addicted. Most of the time it’s just been him in a trailer or hotel room. When he called people and used awful words, it wasn’t to hurt them—it was trying to get them to see the pain their actions cause to the most vulnerable, not just him. He just wanted them to stop.
He’s never threatened anyone. But they’ve moved his case from OC to LA to SF, digging through his phone, and now his health is collapsing. We’re scared. We’re trying to get his Hope After Stroke dream going, but right now he needs a safe place to live and legal help from someone who ...
